The Energia Space program, also known as the Energia-Buran program, was a Soviet initiative aimed at developing reusable spacecraft and launch vehicles. It was intended to compete with the United States' Space Shuttle program. The program's centerpiece was the Energia rocket – the most powerful space launcher in history and universal space rocket system. Its first flight was in 1987 after 10 years of development. It was capable of carrying large payloads up to 100 tons.
