Quartz, Automatic or Solar: Which Watch is Best for You
Choosing a watch isn't just about how it looks on your wrist. The movement inside determines how your watch is powered, how it keeps time and most importantly, the maintenance it may need throught its life.
So which movement is right for you?
QUARTZ: For Everyday Reliability
Quartz watches are powered by a conventional battery and are known for their accuracy, reliability and simplicity.
The battery will eventually need replacing, generally every few years depending on the watches age and its functions. When replacing a battery, it's also a good opportunity to have the condition of the watch, seals and water resistance checked where applicable (E.g., Pressure Tests for +50m WR).
Is quartz right for you?
If you would like an accurate, dependable watch that you can simply put on and wear, quartz is an excellent everyday choice!
AUTOMATIC: For the Watch Lover
Automatic watches are mechanical, meaning that there is no conventional battery. Instead the movement of your wrist helps wind the watch and power its intricate internal mechanism.
You have the option of purchasing an automatic watch winder to keep your watch wound when you are not wearing it.
However, no battery doesn't mean no maintenance. Automatic movements contain many small mechanical components, along wwith oils and lubricants that deteriorate over time. Periodic servicing is important to keep the movement operating as it should (we recommend servicing every 5 years).
If left unworn beyond its power reserve, an automatic watch will also stop and need to be wound and reset.
Is automatic right for you?
If you appreciate traditional watchmaking, mechanical craftsmanship and the experince of owning a timepiece, an automatic may be your perfect match.
SOLAR: For Low-Maintenance Convenience
Solar watches use natural or artificial light to generate energy, which is stored in a rechargeable cell, commonly referred to as a capacitor.
One of the biggest misconceptions about solar watches is that they will never require attention. While the rechargeable cell can last for many years, it is not necessarily a lifetime component. Eventually, its ability to hold a charge can decline and replacement may be required.
Is solar right for you?
If you want quartz accuracy and everyday convenience with less frequent battery maintenance, solar is a great option, particularly if your watch is regularly exposed to light.
When you are not wearing it, we recommend leaving it where it can get direct exposure to light.
So, Which Should You Choose?
There is no single movement that is best for everyone (unless you ask Richard).
- Choose quartz if you value accuracy and simplicity.
- Choose automatic if you want a battery free piece and love traditioal watchmaking.
- Choose solar if you want convenience with less frequent maintenance.
Whichever you choose, remember that every watch requires care eventually. Understanding what's happening beneath the dial can help you choose a watch that suits not only your style, but also the way you intend to wear and maintain it.
